It's the 'BIG' question that Christians sometimes struggle to answer - why do we need to do evangelism? How do we can get started in evangelism? How does prayer fit in and how do we tell our story? What is the purpose behind it and why should 'we' or 'I' be involved? Most Christians would agree we need to do evangelism, but most of the time they shy away from being involved. Over the next few weeks I'll be sharing some tips and thoughts on how we can get started in sharing our faith and how to avoid some pit falls.
Through this blog and the next I'll share 6 reasons why we need to tell others about Jesus...
1. Reaching the lost is central to God's heart:
It's clear from the bible that we as human beings were created to be in relationship with God. Obviously because of our sinful disobedience to God that relationship became broken. However, God loves us and wants us to be in relationship with Him - 'For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish' (John 3:16)
They key aim in our evangelism is not just to make friends with people, although that great, but to help lead people into a relationship with their heavenly father who loves them. The bible says "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise as some count slackness, but is longsuffering towards us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9) Of course we mustn't just see people as 'projects' we've got to work on, but human beings whom God loves and desires to be in relationship with.
2. The need for US to reach out - If we don't tell people who will?
If we don't speak the truth of the gospel into to people's lives, who will? There are plenty of other voices out there that seek to spread 'another Gospel'. Part of our work in evangelism is to show people their need of a saviour. It's not just about connecting with God and having a better life (although that maybe true) but bringing people to a realisation that they stand guilty before a Holy God and need someone who can stand in the gap for them - that person of course is Jesus! The God who has saved us through his goodness and grace also requires us to share that good news with others too. You may be the only Christian in your circle of friends; you may be the answer to someone's prayer as you share the gospel with the person they have been praying for! Don't wallow in guilt about the fact you've not been sharing you're faith, pray for an opportunity and go for it

3. The closeness of eternity
Some statistics say that just under 155000 people die everyday. Of course they are not all people who have grown old, people of all ages die, in different parts of the world, due to different situations every day. Most people I know who take a holiday each year spend time preparing for it - but how many prepare for eternity? Death is not the most joyous of subjects to talk about but it is reality for each and everyone of us. It's something we don't like to think about or talk about - but is a certainty for each of us.
This is why there is an urgency about the gospel. How many of us have been shocked by the news of the death of someone we knew, or someone we were only just talking with yesterday. None of us know when our time to die will come, that's why we need to be prepared, and why we need to share the gospel message - for as one evangelist put it 'There is something like a too late'!
